I agree with you there! In fact, when I blogged about Virginia yesterday, that was one of my first points. The poor woman - let her grow up! I think those that force the "child bride" label on Virginia (and offer no alternative) are just fishing for another "odd" connection with Poe, rather than allowing him a normal, happy marriage.

My brief answer to what is obviously a complicated and widely-debated issue: Personally, I have long suspected that Virginia had more intelligence and character than most give her credit for possessing, and I believe that she had more of an influence on his life than one would guess from most of the biographies. Unfortunately, she is such an enigmatic figure--even more so than Poe--that it's been easy to dismiss her altogether.
