The Ravens QB, a rookie, played like a rookie. Still the Ravens were in a position to win, down by 2, driving, with 4 minutes left. That helmet on helmet hit by Clark on McGahee should have drawn a flag. Clark laid Welker of the Pats low earlier this year with his shoulder (legal) and the Pats got a flag, why not the Ravens when it was clearly helmet-spearing?
The NFL doesn't do enough to prevent that sort of vicious hitting. Player should tackle with their bodies, not their helmets. Steelers' only TD before the interception was a freaky long pass which was a busted play, Rothy is a great QB, but the Ravens defense was great; the Ravens should have made high percentage passes on their drive with 4 minutes left trailing by 2 points, instead of forcing the ball downfield.
With all the violence and bad penalty calls, Poe might not have approved of the NFL. Perhaps the Ravens' loss was Poe's way of expressing this. With a little luck, the Ravens could have won that game.

I picked a horrible time to visit Baltimore! I arrived late (and it was COLD!), the next day most of downtown was in lock down for Obama's visit (and it was COLD!), then I was a Steelers fan in Baltimore while the Ravens were playing in Pittsburgh, and finally there was a parade blocking off a few roads on Monday for Martin Luther King Day... All in all, though, it was great being in town for Poe's 200th - I wouldn't have been anywhere else.

As a Steelers fan, I'm glad how the game turned out!
But, as a closet Ravens fan in January 2009, I was a bit disappointed. The Ravens played a decent game but I expected more sacks on Roethlisberger and, ultimately, a closer score.
The good news? The Eagles lost. It's not that I dislike the Eagles, but their fans are awful!

The Ravens will be playing on a cold, dreary night to get into the Super Bowl on the very eve of Poe's 200th birthday. If the game goes into over-time, it could concievably cross over into the actual date of Jan. 19. What if that happens and seconds after midnight the Ravens pull out a win?
Midnight Dreary, Steelers Fan and devotee of Poe, will enjoy this one, I'm sure.
On Sunday, will you cheer on the Baltimore Ravens, whose name honors an immortal American writer, or the Pittsburgh Steelers, whose name honors a dying American industry? The choice is clear!
I don't think there's another sports team with a literary connection to their name, is there?
I suppose you could make an argument for the New York Knicks and Washington Irving. Someone could, anyway, but it won't be me. :)
By the way, I just saw this Bleacher Report this morning. Lots, and lots of Poe references - this guy did some research. Not necessarily the best article, but lots of fun!

Kind of interesting too, that Poe died (was murdered?) in Baltimore, and Poe's mistreatment and death is a raven's shadow on American Letters.
Amazing game v. Titans, the #1 AFC seed, who lose tough ones. Huge, 4th quarter pass to Heap "out of space, out of time."
Concord as big literary city? I dunno, Emerson & Thoreau didn't write fiction, literary criticism, or very good poetry; they were philosophers in a rambling sort of way, editorial writers almost. Hawthorne came from Salem--though he did live on Emerson's property, like Thoreau--and Hawthorne's melancholy is tied up in Salem's maritime existence, because his daddy, a sailor died at sea, and President Jefferson's embargo made Salem a ghost town. Emerson had English ties; he was Carlyle's literary agent and his 'English Traits' was his most ambitious work, a non-fiction paean to the English race. Poe really had no home, no base. That's one of the things which makes him so American.
By the way, after one crazy game in Tennessee, the Ravens have just beaten the Titans to move on. My guess is that next week we'll see a Ravens / Steelers meeting... which means I'm going to have a difficult time picking who to cheer for.
What a game, though. Despite all the yardage Baltimore allowed, they kept the Titans to only 10 points. Hell of a nailbiter. A lot of frustrating plays... and one odd call, or, really, non-call which will live in infamy. I had trouble staying seated during that 4th quarter!

Don't forget, the Ravens' mascots are three birds named Edgar, Allan and Poe.
The Poe connection -- plus a rich history that includes Fitzgerald, James, Dos Passos, Sinclair, Hammett and more -- must make Baltimore the most literary city in America.
Ha ha! Well, I'm a Steelers fan first and foremost...
But, the Ravens are having a hell of a season! They are, obligingly, my number two team based on the name alone (despite their rivalry with PIT). I think it would be a great year for the Ravens to go all the way, so I sure wouldn't complain if they did!
The good news: the overrated Patriots are not even in the play-offs!
Hey, don't get me started on Belicheat.... LOL
It would be nice to see the Ravens go far in Poe's 200th year, but just making the playoffs is nice with new coach and new QB...
