If you've ever seen the book "The Portraits and Daguerreotypes of Edgar Allan Poe" (the author, I believe, is Michael Deas), there's an image that was believed for a time to be a self-portrait by Poe. I think the provenance has been disproved but it is still intriguing.

If you've see the A&E biography, then you'll remember the part where the narrator talks about Poe's time at the University of Virginia and how he would draw on the walls of his dorm room. The narrator also mentions here how Poe's classmates could not tell if Poe would become a great artist, or a great writer. Also, hanging in the Poe Museum in Richmond, there is a drawing by Poe of a female friend, which is very good and, as I remember, has a very sweet and wispy quality. Does anyone know where I can find some more information on Poe as a visual artist? Did he continue to draw throughout his life, or was this an early hobby?
